Main Objective:   To gather and share experiences on water regarding people’s participation in this sector.
Brief Description: Following the Fourth FAP Conference in December 1995, the concept of people’s participation and GO-NGO collaboration in water sector projects had been accepted by the Government of Bangladesh and were applied in a number of projects such as “Khulna-Jessore Drainage Rehabilitation Project (KJDRP)”, “Compartmentalization Pilot Project (CPP)”, “System Rehabilitation Project” (SRP), “North East Regional Water Management Project (NERP)”. Apart from the government projects, there were also considerable experiences amongst different NGOs on people’s participation gained through implementation of various projects in general and hardcore water sector projects in particular. There were also good examples of Government and NGO co-operation in natural resources and environmental planning through the National Environment Management Action Plan (NEMAP) exercises.
Output The workshop arrived in a consensus to review the guidelines for people’s participation and revise periodically based on experiences gained. Emphasis was also given on collection and dissemination of the experiences gained regarding to people’s participation in the sector. Workshop participants held the opinion that the National Water Management Plan should ensure people’s active participation.
